The image of Our Lady Help of Christians was placed by the Slovenians in the Church of St. Cornelius in Heerlerheide, which is part of the city of Heerlen in Limburg, Netherlands. In the 1930s, around 6,000 Slovenians settled here due to the mining industry. The men were miners. The strong Slovenian community was also very active and prominent in cultural and religious life, so it became an integral part of the religious and cultural life of the area. Traces of this life of the Slovenian community are still visible today, as several aspects of Slovenian religious customs and traditions remain in the local religious life. For example, there is still a regular monthly Mass for the Slovenian community in this church, and the Slovenian Midnight Mass on Christmas is attended by 150 to 200 locals. The Easter Resurrection procession is also preserved, with many locals participating, and alongside the Slovenian choir, the parish brass band also takes part.
Decades ago, the Slovenians succeeded in having the chapel of Our Lady Help of Christians from Brezje placed on the wall of the left side nave of the Church of St. Cornelius. This chapel is regularly visited for various devotions, including the blessing of Easter foods. It is also a place where Slovenian parishioners and locals stop briefly to pray for the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The chapel receives a lot of attention from the Slovenian community and is always beautifully decorated.
