The Chapel of Mary Help of Christians was built in 1936. In 2002, it was renovated by artists from the Aletti Center under the guidance of Fr. Marko Ivan Rupnik. The renovation includes the ceiling, especially with its symbolism of colored circles. The meaning of the colors is drawn from ancient Christian tradition. The red color of the first circle represents God, the circle in the center of the chapel represents creation in green and humanity in blue, while the three circles above the altar in orange and gold symbolize God’s faithfulness, meaning the holiness of God. The circle itself represents the sky in Christian tradition, and the cube represents creation, the cosmos. The altar is in the shape of a cube, as it points to the cosmic dimension of the Holy Eucharist, which includes all the earth. The incision in the front face of the cube, decorated with red and gold, reminds us of Christ’s wound, from which God’s life flows to all, His eternal Love.
In the chapel, the mosaic represents a stone fabric of creation, on which the sacred image is placed, like a cosmic cloak. It also reminds us of the floor, the floor of grace. Through this sacred image, the prayers of the faithful rise to God, and through this holy image, God’s grace flows.
On the front wall of the chapel’s porch, there are depictions of two angels. The angel is a witness to God’s presence. Where the angel is, God is. The angel on the right is in motion, rushing, with a climbing rope over his shoulder and holding the three-pronged scepter of the Holy Trinity. The Holy Trinity is God revealed to us as Love. Love is a faithful, indestructible relationship that endures all things and never abandons the beloved. God, in His love, sends an angel who accompanies us everywhere, unintrusively, humbly, and lovingly.
The image of the angel on the left represents a figure that stands firm. The angel holds in one hand a flower of eternity, representing God’s immortality and eternity, and in the other hand, he holds the world, a sign that God’s Love embraces all and sustains everything in life. God’s Love reaches to the most hidden corner of the earth and reaches people with salvation, even if a person falls into the deepest and darkest abyss.
