San Martin 51, B6700APA Lujan, Buenos Aires, Argentina

Luján, a city located 68 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires, is the largest Marian sanctuary in Argentina. The grand neo-Gothic basilica is dedicated to Our Lady of Luján, the patroness of Argentina. The city is known as the capital of faith, and every year, over six million people make a pilgrimage to the basilica, many walking from Buenos Aires. In the lower chapel of the basilica, there is also an altar dedicated to Mary Help of Christians. Every May, Slovenians from the area, dressed in traditional costumes, make a large pilgrimage to this Marian sanctuary.

The image of Mary is located directly beneath the main altar in the crypt.

This image was painted by Marijan Koritnik, and it was placed in the Lujan Basilica during the May pilgrimage in 1949 as a gesture of gratitude and for the safe deliverance from communism. The image is carried in the procession on the square in front of the basilica every year during the pilgrimage, which takes place on the second Sunday of May.

Throughout the year, the image of Our Lady of Help is visited by individual pilgrims from Argentina, as well as by compatriots who come to Argentina for visits from Slovenia and other countries.
